With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Russel Akio Inouye on January 10, 2025, enveloped by the love and presence of his cherished family.

A man of extraordinary character, Russel left a legacy of devotion, strength, and unwavering kindness that will resonate with all who were fortunate to know him.
Russel proudly served as a firefighter and Captain with the Toronto Fire Department from 1969 to 1999. In his 30-year career, he not only protected his community but also forged lifelong bonds, becoming a steadfast leader who inspired respect and camaraderie. Known as much for his culinary skills as his bravery, Russel was renowned for feeding his team with hearty, lovingly prepared meals—a reflection of his care for those around him.

A true craftsman at heart, Russel’s skill in carpentry transformed raw wood into timeless masterpieces. His crowning achievement was the home he built with his own hands—a sanctuary of love and laughter for his family. His creativity extended to the kitchen, where his roast beef and Yorkshire pudding dinners became legendary family traditions, cooked with equal parts skill and love.

Russel’s quick wit, sharp intellect, and unyielding determination shone through in his love of poker and solving puzzles, pursuits that highlighted his ability to think deeply and strategically. Yet, beyond his talents and passions, it was his steadfast values—loyalty, honour, and compassion—that defined him most. Russel was a man of quiet strength, speaking volumes through his actions, always putting his family and loved ones at the centre of his world.

Predeceased by his parents, Haruo “Buck” Inouye and Mary Yae Inouye, and his beloved son, Shawn Mitchell Inouye, Russel leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. He is survived by his devoted wife, Susanne Inouye; his daughters, Andrea Inouye and Melanie Inouye (Steve); his treasured grandchildren, Kalysha, Mackenzie, Courtney, Samantha, and Stephen; and his great-grandchildren, Estelle, Phoenix, and Jax. Russel is also deeply missed by his siblings, Doug (late Denise) Inouye and Kathy (Jim) Gardner, as well as his “other cherished children,” Janet and Andre. His nieces and nephews, Allison, Jennifer, David, and Meghan, will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.

Russel’s family will honour his life privately when the clouds subside, finding solace in the memories they hold dear. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to your local food bank, a fitting tribute to Russel’s generous spirit and commitment to helping others in need.

Russel Akio Inouye will remain forever in our hearts—a guiding light of love, resilience, and integrity, whose legacy will inspire generations to come.
