October 24, 1947 – December 20, 2024

Surrounded by family, Bernice Adele Hedger (nee Wood), peacefully passed from this world following a long battle with cancer on December 20, 2024, at the Margaret Bahen Hospice. Cherished mother to Kimberley (Denis Biro), Stephanie (Martin Morris) and Bradley (Anna) Hedger, very proud Grandma to Skylar, Adam, Maxwell, Lillian and Bruce and Nana to MacKenzie. Survived by her brothers Allan (Gina) and Carl (Lynda) Wood and lovingly remembered by her many nieces & nephews. Predeceased by her parents Wray and Marion Wood, younger brother Donald and former husband of 25 years, Douglas.

Bernice’s remarkable life’s journey began on a farm in Mount Hope, Ontario, where her work ethic and never give up attitude formed and served her well throughout life. A house full of family and friends breaking bread together, singing and dancing and sharing stories was a staple throughout her life and reflected all that she held dear.

After travelling many parts of Europe as a beautician with Love Cosmetics, Bernice began a lifetime career as a Real Estate Broker for 30+ years and was President of the York Region Real Estate Board for 10+ years.

In her personal life, as a mother and grandmother, none were prouder and more gracious in supporting all of our activities; cheering from the stands, coaching and encouraging us in our personal endeavours. Bernice was a firm believer in the importance of family and instilled life lessons and core values with a passion for our Scottish roots and traditions.

Always up for an adventure, people loved to be around her. She was fun and funny, intelligent and well read, witty and artistic. She was a highland dancer, curler, oboe player, knitter, seamstress and an award-winning quilter. She loved a ceilidh and valued her lifelong friendships and formed a strong sisterhood that was with her to the end. She was often sought out by others for a confidential ear, for her insights, life experiences and wise counsel. On paper, her medical conditions were overwhelming yet she repeatedly beat the odds with her optimism and determination. She chose to see through the hardship and instead see the good and honour in the journey, and to do it her way.

We would like to recognize the exceptional personal care that our mom received from the staff and volunteers at the Margaret Behan Hospice. The compassion, empathy and professionalism were extraordinary, and we could not be more grateful for the dignity, friendship and care given to our mom and family.

A special thank you to Dr. Rana, Dr. Lebner, RPN Chandra and all the staff and volunteers at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake for their personal care. All the homecare PSWs and nurses who helped Bernice to live out her wishes as long as she could - thank you is not enough.

In honour of Bernice’s long and courageous battle with cancer, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Bernice’s name to the Margaret Bahen Hospice.

Cremation has taken place.
