Newmarket’s skateboarders are about to get a brand new place to shred as the town’s first outdoor skate park is set to open Aug. 30.
The project has been in the works for more than two years at the Magna Centre and the town will hold a special event to celebrate its opening. The park will include a variety of features for riders of all ages and skill levels.
The municipality credited a public engagement process with more than 400 participants in the park's creation.
“Their feedback helped shape this unique and first-in-Newmarket facility that will provide more much needed recreational opportunities for youth to exercise, be outdoors and have fun,” the municipality said.
Newmarket began consultation on the park in 2020, presenting a final concept design in 2021. The outdoor park will feature a junior area, a central sculptural turn-around quarter-pipe, a multi-depth flow bowl and more. There will also be gathering areas, benches and landscaping features around the park.
“The outdoor skate park will include a variety of skate features to accommodate junior to advanced riders and provide learning opportunities to all users and age groups,” the municipality said.
The town is inviting the public to attend the facility's grand opening Aug. 30 at 3 p.m., with residents getting to take the first run at it.
