Newmarket hopes to watch McDavid bring home Stanley Cup

You can cheer on hometown hockey star Connor McDavid and the Oilers at the final game viewing at Riverwalk Commons at 8 p.m. tonight

Newmarket is hoping to see a night decades in the making as hometown hockey star Connor McDavid vies for his first-ever Stanley Cup.

The municipality will broadcast Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final live tonight from Riverwalk Commons, temporarily christened Connor McDavid Square. Despite some nasty weather, hundreds of fans have attended to show their support as McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers have come back from being down 3-0 to take the Florida Panthers to a final game in the best-of-seven series.

“Let’s bring the cup home where it belongs,” one local said on social media.

McDavid, one of the world’s top hockey players, grew up in the Newmarket area and the town has seen a wave of support for the Oilers as he plays in his first-ever Stanley Cup final.

Both the municipality and local institutions have been showing their support. McDavid went to Clearmeadow Public School in Newmarket and the school has noted that on its front sign.

“Go Oilers and Connor McDavid, a Clearmeadow student,” the sign reads.

If the Oilers do fall, neighbouring Holland Landing will have a Stanley Cup champion, as Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers comes from that community. Bennett and McDavid were once teammates on the York Simcoe Express.

You can watch the game with the community starting at 8 p.m. for free at the square at 200 Doug Duncan Dr. Parking is available nearby but the town suggests you consider carpooling, biking, walking or taking public transit. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

“Grab a lawn chair, bring your friends and neighbours, and let's cheer Canada's team to victory,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said on social media earlier in the series.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase, including alcohol. However, alcohol not purchased on site is not permitted. Arrive early to secure a good spot, and bring a non-perishable food item for the Newmarket Food Pantry to receive a free orange or blue towel.
