2 Newmarket players help Team Ontario win national football title

Huron Heights Warriors' offensive lineman Keegan Milcoy and linebacker Darcy Winsor help Ontario to first Team Canada Cup in decade

Two Newmarket football talents helped Team Ontario take home its first national U18 football title in a decade.

Team Ontario won the Football Canada Cup July 13 in Regina, defeating Quebec 45-7. Among the squad were two members of Newmarket’s Huron Heights Warriors: offensive lineman Keegan Milcoy and linebacker Darcy Winsor.

“Great past two weeks with Football Ontario as we bring home gold,” Milcoy said on social media.” Thanks to all the coaches that helped along the way.”

The Football Canada Cup annually showcases the top under-18 players in the country and features teams from eight provinces battling it out. This year marked the first time since 2014 that Ontario came home with the win.

“Huge congrats,” The Warriors Football Booster Club said on social media. “Proud of you boys.”

Winsor had multiple tackles throughout each game, including three solo and four assisted ones in the final versus Quebec. Milcoy got an assisted tackle versus Saskatchewan.

It was Windsor’s third time playing with Team Ontario in the tournament, while this was Milcoy’s first time with the squad.

Coming home with gold medals, both players are still eligible to play with Huron Heights Warriors next year.

Meanwhile, two more local football talents will vie for another tournament win with Team Ontario. Mason Hayhoe and C Julian Geraci are with the province’s U16 team and are vying for gold as part of the Eastern Challenge Cup. Team Ontario is set to play in the gold medal game for the four-team tournament July 21.
