When Thomas Zachos was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease in high school, it was tough for him.
But Zachos leaned on his family to help find his path in life after struggling initially with the disease that can affect different parts of the body, including the brain and muscles.
Now 25 years old, he wants to help empower others through his company, Thomas & Co.
The Aurora resident created the online business as a way to inspire others to chase their dreams, while donating back to help those who face obstacles in life. He decided to focus on clothes because he believes that looking good can help instil positivity and confidence in people
“I just want to show people that everyone struggles everyday, and our mission is to empower those people,” he said. “Believe in yourself, trust your heart, stay true to what you believe in, and things will go your way.”
The sustainable clothing brand officially launched in September 2023 after Zachos was inspired after successfully raising thousands of dollars for grassroots mitochondrial research by selling hoodies.
Zachos saod that the hoodies were a massive hit, but he felt he could do more and raise more money for good causes. That’s why 10 per cent of profits from Thomas & Co. go toward charities that support rare disease, mental health and disability.
“It’s so important to give back to others in need,” he said. “I have mitochondrial disease and I know what that feels like, but I can’t imagine what other people go through.”
Zachos, a self-published author, has spoken to schools in York Region about his book, Superheroes Like Me, which he wrote to show those in the community that they can achieve anything and the hardships in their life don’t define them.
“Thomas & Co. is just another way to show people that you can do anything,” he said. “We all deal with different things, everybody has something they have to overcome.”
Although the clothing brand is still relatively new, Zachos said it has seen a lot of support from both Canadians and Americans.
“The community is amazing and I just hope we can continue to grow,” he said. “I never dreamt how far this would actually go and I’m just honoured to see support across Canada.”
Thomas & Co. is driven by inclusivity, community, and connection, Zachos said, and he hopes it continues to grow and inspire.
“I hope more and more people feel comfortable sharing how they’re feeling when they’re struggling,” he said.
