Sgt. Gerry Kempers passed away suddenly at the age of 50 on May 3

York Regional Police officers lined Main Street Newmarket this afternoon to salute Sgt. Gerry Kempers, who passed away suddenly on May. 3.

A procession of cars travelled along Main Street to Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home on Main.

York Regional Police Association also paid tribute to Kempers, 50, who was a member of its board of directors.

"Our condolences are with the family and friends of YRPA Director Gerry Kempers, also a former TPA member at the Toronto Police Service. He will be deeply missed by both police services," said the YRPA on Twitter.

His obituary refers to Kempers as "a devoted father, loving husband, caring brother, dear son, and a friend to many."

"Gerry lived his life with immense purpose. He cared about people, loved his calling, worked hard, and wore his heart on his sleeve. He loved to laugh and make others laugh, tell stories, and spend time with family and friends. Gerry touched so many lives, and his legacy will live on with all of them. He will be forever loved and missed."

Donations in his memory may be to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or SickKids Foundation.
