When you’re Christmas shopping this holiday season, York Regional Police is asking you to pick up a little something extra for a child in need.
The Holiday Heroes campaign runs to Dec. 17 with York Region residents asked to drop off a new unwrapped toy, gift card, children's clothing item, or monetary donation at their local police facility, including the District 1 headquarters at 240 Prospect St. in Newmarket.
Monetary donations can also be made online at the YRP website.
While the campaign has begun, the official launch event is being held Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Newmarket Soccer Club, at 621 Newpark Blvd.
Official remarks will be made at 10 a.m. followed by a soccer game between YRP officers and local soccer coaches.
The Holiday Heroes campaign features a number of other events over the next few weeks when the local force will be collecting donations.
The entire schedule is posted on the YRP website, with the campaign visiting Canadian Tire in Newmarket and the Upper Canada Mall on a number of occasions.
This is the 25th annual Holiday Heroes campaign. According to police, they have raised more than $2.1 million in monetary donations, new toys, new children's clothing and food since 2008.
Everything raised and collected in the campaign stays in York Region, with the proceeds supporting people who registered for assistance through local Salvation Army programs and Victim Services of York Region.
