A vigil is being held in York Region tonight following the attack at Club Q, an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, which killed five people and injured 19 others.
Pflag York Region, CAYR Community Connections, and York Pride have partnered with York Regional Police and the City of Markham to host the vigil called Bright the Night "as we mourn and reflect on the attack on our queer community at Club Q in Colorado Springs."
The mass shooting occurred on Saturday, Nov. 19 just before midnight. A 22-year-old was arrested.
The vigil will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at Markham Civic Centre, between the Great Hall and the Markham Theatre.
Attendees are invited to share their thoughts in writing on a memory board. Then there will be words shared by Pflag York Region, CAYR Community Connections and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
Candles will be lit in honour of the victims and a Pride flag will be raised as a sign of community resilience.
Everyone is invited to connect with each other and reflect. The candles will be provided and there will be snacks and warm beverages available.
