The Regional Municipality of York is turning out the lights at its facilities for Earth Hour tonight and is inviting residents to do the same.
The region said it would join communities around the world to turn off non-essential lights Earth Hour on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Lights will go off at the York Region administrative centre in Newmarket and other regional facilities.
“Along with turning off lights and other unnecessary electronics for one hour, this global event is an opportunity to consider other small adjustments to benefit the health of the planet year-round,” the region said in a news release.
The region will also be turning out the lights at its south services centre in Richmond Hill, its transportation operations centre in East Gwillimbury and at community and health services in Vaughan.
The region said residents should take action and make small adjustments to benefit the health of the planet year-round, such as finding alternatives to driving, making homes more energy efficient and powering down devices before bed.
Beyond Earth Hour, the region said it remains committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 through steps like electrifying its transit fleet.
