York Regional Police has surpassed its fundraising goal ahead of the big polar plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario tomorrow night.

The fundraising plunge set for Thursday, Feb. 23 has raised $37,209, exceeding its goal of $35,000, with the force continuing to seek support.

A number of participants have already signed up to submerge themselves into the frigid water at the event, which this year has a Canadiana theme.

Many of the teams have embraced the theme in their names such as Canuck'n Crazy, Lucky Canucks, Lumber Jacks, Plaid Polar Bears, and The Shed Caribooze. Other teams lean into the cold side of things like Chilly Coppers and Freezin' for a Reason.

Participants are encouraged to dress up like Canadian icons for the plunge. Suggestions from YRP include "Anne Murray, Nickleback, Bob and Doug Mackenzie or a hockey team."

There are prizes for the best costume, and also the best plunge and the highest fundraiser.

The event takes place at the York Regional Police Association headquarters at 63 Eric T. Smith Way in Aurora from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 23.

You can still register to take the jump into chilly waters or make a donation online
