Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the police shooting death of a 37-year-old man believed to have killed one woman and severely wounded another woman and two small children in East Gwillimbury on Saturday.
The SIU began its investigation by interviewing a York Regional Police officer who is considered a witness to the incident that occurred when officers responded to a weapons call at a house on Ridge Gate Crescent in Mount Albert at about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6, according to an SIU news release.
The two officers directly involved in the shooting have not been interviewed. Under legislation, they are not compelled to present themselves for an interview with the SIU or submit their notes.
SIU investigators have located and interviewed three neighbours who witnessed what happened and found video footage from two sources.
They have also taken cartridge cases and bullets from the scene, as well as police equipment, as evidence.
The SIU will not be releasing the name of the dead suspect after his family asked for it to be withheld.
On Saturday, the responding officers found a deceased woman at the front door of the residence.
On entering the house, two officers became involved in an interaction with a man, and shots were fired, the SIU stated.
The SIU, a provincial agency mandated to look into all injuries and deaths at the hands of police, has assigned five investigators to the case.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
