Friday, July 1 is a statutory holiday for Canada Day. Here's what's going on in and around Newmarket this long weekend. Happy Canada Day!
What's open:
Malls and shopping centres in the region will close early, including Upper Canada Mall (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Vaughan Mills (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and Hillcrest Mall (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Tanger Outlets (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
These Town of Newmarket facilities: Outdoor Gorman Pool, 1 to 5 p.m. (check you meet admission standards, fees apply); Tim Hortons Water Feature at Riverwalk Commons, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; an Frank Stronach, Dr. Margaret Arkinstall and Rogers Spray Pads, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Pharmacies, including Shoppers Drug Mart at Yonge and Savage (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.), Yonge and Davis (9 a.m. to midnight), and 404 Town Centre (8 a.m. to midnight).
Grocery stores, including John's No Frills on Davis Drive (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Dickie's No Frills on Leslie Street (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Metro locations at Mulock and at Davis, which are both open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What's happening:
Tim Hortons Canada Day is happening in Newmarket with events all day. The daytime concert and festival will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons. It will include entertainment, food vendors, buskers, face painting, and a beer garden.
Festivities will also be taking place on Main Street and at the Elman W. Campbell Museum. More information, including details about parking and road closures is available online.
From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., there will be a concert and fireworks at George Richardson Park. This will feature music from the Newmarket Citizen's Band followed by Switchbeat. Fireworks are scheduled from 10:10 to 10:30 p.m.
There are three days of festivities in Aurora, beginning tonight.
Richmond Hill offers live performances, a midway, an art exhibit and fireworks throughout Canada Day.
Canada's Wonderland in Vaughan will also be celebrating Canada Day with live music, themed food, lumberjacks shows, and fireworks at 10 p.m. on July 1.
