What's going on in and around Newmarket this weekend

This weekend, here's your chance to touch a truck and other vehicles, get your car washed by firefighers for a good cause, celebrate Upper Canada's Mall 50th birthday, and enjoy a Big Band Brunch

Thursday, May 23

Touch a Truck: This free, fun, hands-on event hosted by the Town of Newmarket, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Robert N. Shelton Operations Centre, 1275 Maple Hill Court, allows you to touch, explore and get up close with a variety of vehicles used by the municipality, including a fire truck, Zamboni, backhoe, dump truck and more. The event is in celebration of the National Public Works Week. Arrive prior to 7:30 p.m. to ensure entry. This event can get loud at times, so safety ear plugs are encouraged.  Parking can be a challenge as this is a very popular event, so leave lots of time to find a spot and be careful of your friends and neighbours on the road making their way to the event. 

Friday, May 24

Aurora-Newmarket Walking Group: Join the group on a 5-km loop on the paved Tom Taylor Trail, meeting at 6 p.m. at the AOK Park in Newmarket, near Timothy Street. (The group usually walks on Thursday, this week the date has changed. 

Saturday, May 25

Community Living Central York Spring Craft Market: Community Living Central York, 575 Penrose St., Newmarket holds a craft market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CYFS Car Wash for United Way: Central York Fire Services and the Central York Professional Firefighters Association are hosting a car wash for United Way from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station 4-5, 300 Earl Stewart Dr. in Aurora (across from the Real Canadian Superstore.) Bring your car or light truck to be washed by a team of firefighters. Donations of any denomination (cash, credit or debit card) will be accepted. New this year is a car seat workshop provided by St. John Ambulance. Members of the CYPFFA have volunteered their time to host this fundraising initiative to support fighting local poverty. 

Upper Canada Mall Birthday Party: You're invited to Upper Canada Mall’s 50th birthday party at Market Court from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with party games, prizes and a retro photo booth. A visual timeline will highlight the mall’s growth over the decades, and a large gold 50 structure that will be around for photo opportunities until the end of June. Newmarket Farmers' Market: It's the 25th season of the Newmarket Farmers' Market at Riverwalk Commons, on Doug Duncan Drive, where you can connect with local farmers, enjoy delicious treats, discover unique artisans, take in some live music, and enter a draw for a market basket, while visiting with family and friends. The market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until October.

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine.  Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Big Band Brunch: Grey Goat Pub & Grill and the After Hours Big Band present Big Band Brunch from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 74 Main St. S. Newmarket. $7 cover.

Town of Newmarket presents Spoons, Friday, May 31:  Enjoy a night of new wave and pop music from this Juno-nominated band featuring all their hits and fan favourites, along with some new songs and stories from the road at Newmarket’s NewRoads Performing Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $49.15. Derrick Ross, Rob Preuss, Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne would help define the sound of pop and New Wave in the ‘80s, with hits including Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic, Old Emotions and Tell No Lies. Their album Arias & Symphonies was named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The '80’s by the Chart Magazine

Newmarket Rib & Beer Fest, May 31 to June 2: Savour the beer and barbecue ribs at the Newmarket leg of the Northern Heat Rib Series, in partnership with Newmarket Rotary Club, at the Upper Canada Mall southwest lot (off Davis Drive), 17600 Yonge St. Friday 4 to 11 p.m, Saturday noon to 11 p.m.; Sunday noon to 7 p.m. $2 per person, kids under 5 get in free. Newmarket Garden Club Annual Plant Sale, Saturday, June 1: Newmarket Garden Club hosts its annual sale from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, lounge 2, 100 Eagle St. West, with annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs, indoor plants all grown by club members. Cash only. Expert advice available. Come early, don't be disappointed, it's always a sellout.

Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Yard Sale, Saturday, June 1: The Ladies Auxiliary Branch 426 welcome window shoppers and treasure hunters alike to their annual yard and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Legion, 707 Srigley St. Tables available. Contact Wendy at [email protected] 

Tapestry Chamber Choir Concert, Saturday, June 1: The Tapestry Chamber Choir welcomes its new director, Robert Hennig, at its Canada: Coast to Coast to Coast concert at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 222 Church St., Newmarket. Joining the performance is the 40-member chamber choir from Huron Heights Secondary School and director Arlene Charters. BRAVE for Girls, Saturday, June 8: Northridge Church hosts BRAVE, a free one-day event created to remind girls that they are valuable and worth being celebrated. Aimed at girls aged 12 to 16, BRAVE is a day filled with music, art therapy classes, lunch, candy, a self-defence class, and swag bag from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Register here.

York Pride Festival, June 14 to 15:  York Pride Festival in Newmarket begins with York Pride Sparkling Night on Friday, June 14 at 6 p.m. Riverwalk Commons, followed by Pride on Riverwalk Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr.  York Pride Parade is on Saturday at 3 p.m.
