York Regional Police is getting ready to brrr-ave the cold in the annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario.
The police service has been taking the plunge for more than 10 years now and it is one of their biggest events of the year.
Special Olympics Ontario is a cause that is very near to their hearts, according to Carrie Rutledge who is on the special events team at YRP. She added that it is also the charity of choice for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.
A number of YRP members and local athletes will be plunging at this year's event on Feb. 23, at the York Regional Police Association at 63 Eric T. Smith Way in Aurora from 6 to 9 p.m.
Members of the public are invited to join in and registration is open online. You can sign up in a team or solo.
The theme for this year's event is O Canada! You can come dressed as a Canadian icon like a hockey team, Anne Murray or even Nickleback. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume.
There are also prizes for the best plunge and the highest fundraiser.
Plungers are encouraged to raise funds through the website. The goal of the event is to raise $20,000, and as of Feb. 13 just under $8,000 has been raised.
If you aren't ready to submerge into the frigid waters but still want to support the cause, you can contribute online.
