The cause of the fire at a multi-unit house on Eagle Street Saturday that has left some tenants without a home remains under investigation, Central York Fire Services (CYFS) said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported when a passerby saw smoke coming from a window and called 911 at about 3:47 p.m. May 28. There were no injuries, however, several occupants have been displaced from their home on Eagle near Water Street, CYFS said in an incident report today.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement. They forced their way into the unit and extinguished the fire, whichdid not spread to any other units in the building.
Eagle was closed from Main to Church streets while crews worked to extinguish the fire and assess the damage resulting from the fire.
CYFS deployed four firetrucks and one command vehicle to the fire. There were 16 firefighters and one chief officer. York Paramedic Services, York Regional Police, and the utility company also worked on this scene.
Following this fire, CYFS is reminding residents that fires in houses burn quickly and working smoke alarms can save lives. In Ontario, homeowners are required by law to have smoke alarms on every level of a home and outside all sleeping quarters. In a rental property, this is the landlord's responsibility.
