The Toronto Mandolin Orchestra is coming to Newmarket to perform its expansive repertoire of music, which is grounded in the Canadian-Ukrainian tradition.
The concert on April 24 at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre is the third in Visual and Performing Arts Newmarket's (VPAN) three-show series.
The Toronto Mandolin Orchestra was founded in 1956 and is one of the oldest musical groups in Canada. The orchestra has Canadian-Ukrainian roots and has performed at venues across both countries.
However, membership of the group is very diverse with performers who are Ukrainian, Russian, Italian, Yugoslavian, English and more. Its musical offering is also diverse, spanning the genres of classical, folk, popular and Canadian music.
Despite the name, the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra involves more than just mandolins. The stringed instrument replaces violins in this group but there is also a small wind section and a full percussion section.
The concert follows VPAN's previous two shows: the Young Artists Showcase in February and Rivka Golani and Angela Park in March.
"We are so fortunate to have a thriving arts community here in Newmarket. I'm looking forward to the next concert in Visual and Performing Arts Newmarket's series on April 24, at 2 pm and I'm hoping you can join me," Mayor John Taylor said in an email. "VPAN needs our support so they can continue to offer world class performances in our community."
Tickets for the next show cost $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $10 for students. You can buy tickets online or buy calling the box office at 905-953-5122.
