Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority celebrated 22 "incredible" winners at its 42nd annual awards ceremony Oct. 8.

Newmarket and York Region were among those receiving recognition for environmental efforts at the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority annual conservation awards last night.

Both municipalities were among the 22 recipients of awards, which recognize contributions toward watershed health in the area. Newmarket and York Region were recognized for their efforts in restoring a creek by the Tannery Mall in Newmarket this past year.

Newmarket residents and businesses also received recognition. Conservation authority chair and Barrie Councillor Clare Riepma said it is encouraging to see local leaders taking “pro-active steps to create lasting change.”

“Their actions are making a tangible difference, fostering a future where environmental stewardship is not just a goal but a shared reality,” Riepma said in a news release.

The 42nd annual event has categories recognizing efforts to protect the land, increase community connections and recognize noteworthy individuals.

Newmarket and York Region were recognized for restoring a 60-metre section of Western Creek behind the Tannery Mall, stabilizing it and planting more than 500 native trees and shrubs to help protect nearby infrastructure.

Newmarket businesses and individuals were also recognized. Newmarket and East Gwillimbury business BCX Environmental Consulting received an award for its volunteering with the conservation authority to planting native trees in the two municipalities.

Meanwhile, Newmarket resident Tim Horlings of Hol-Mar Farms received an individual award for completing projects to help conserve muck soil and prevent soil erosion.

“This event is an opportunity to recognize the remarkable efforts of those who are pushing the boundaries of environmental progress,” conservation authority chief administrative officer Rob Baldwin said. “Their work serves as a catalyst, inspiring others and strengthening our community’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural spaces we all depend on.”
