Town of Newmarket facilities close due to storm

All meetings, recreation and drop-in programs are cancelled today

NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF NEWMARKET
*************************
Due to the forecasted combination of 15 to 25 centimetres of snow and ice pellets, along with possible freezing rain, the Town of Newmarket will be closing all Town facilities and buildings as of 12:30 p.m. today (Feb. 12, 2019).

All recreation and drop-in programs are cancelled and Town staff will be in-touch with registered participants. Newmarket Hydro is also closed. For updates on power outages please visit their website

The following meetings scheduled for today have also been cancelled:

  • Newmarket Council Workshop regarding Cyber Security at 1 p.m. at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive)
  • Mulock GO Station Area Secondary Plan Public Information Centre at 7 p.m. at the Community Centre and Lions Hall (200 Doug Duncan Drive) will be rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the same location

The Town is committed to working with its internal staff and its contracted waste collection provider Green for Life (GFL) during inclement weather conditions. For updates on waste collection, please visit their website.

Newmarket snow crews are working to remove ice and snow on arterial, primary and secondary roads as well as sidewalks where schools and Town parks and facilities exist. Residents are reminded to not park vehicles on the street, as it interferes with snow-clearing operations.

To assist with maintaining a safe environment, residents and schools are asked to help shovel their sidewalks if possible. Learn more about our snow-clearing procedures at newmarket.ca/snowfaq

Residents are also urged to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Please place blue bins, green bins and garbage at the end of the driveway and not on top of, or behind snowbanks so that items are easy for GFL operators to collect.
  • Clear fire hydrants adjacent to private property where possible so that hydrants can be easily located and hoses can be hooked up in the event of an emergency.
  • Ensure appliance vents are not blocked by snow or ice to prevent carbon monoxide build-up.
  • Newmarket parks are not maintained for winter activities. Please take extra caution and use at your own risk.
  • Make sure you have a 72-hour emergency kit with items such as flashlight & batteries, first-aid kit, food and bottled water, blankets/sleeping bags and more. Visit Central York Fire Services’ website for a full list.

The Town of Newmarket will be providing timely updates on all services, and re-opening times through the Town’s official Twitter and Facebook account and the Town website at newmarket.ca.

The Town would like to thank residents for their continued patience and understanding during this time. For more information, call 905-895-5193.
