The Town of Aurora is expanding its parklands with the acquisition of a four-acre property on George Street from the York Region District School Board.

The newest parkland purchase follows the acquisition of a 16-acre property on the west side of Yonge Street, just north of Woodhaven last December.

The combined 20 acres were purchased for more than $13.8 million and were funded through parkland reserve, the Town of Aurora said in a news release.

With a commitment to reach 40 per cent total canopy cover by 2034, the expansion of Aurora’s parkland not only protects mature trees but also allows for new young tree growth in natural heritage systems and green spaces, the town stated.

"Green spaces and parkland play a crucial role in fostering a vibrant and healthy community. As Aurora continues to grow, we need to ensure we have adequate park space and recreational amenities in our community — it’s critical to the long-term health of our residents and is a key part of what makes Aurora such
a great place to live," said Mayor Tom Mrakas.

“Parks are not just patches of greenery; they are the heart of a community, providing spaces for recreation, relaxation, and social interaction,” he added.

Residents will soon have the opportunity to provide input into the development of park spaces in both locations, ensuring that it aligns with the needs and preferences of the community, the town stated.
