The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Newmarket’s Kurtis Gabriel to the Chicago Blackhawks Dec. 9.
The forward was traded in exchange for defenceman Chad Krys. Both players were currently playing in the AHL.
Gabriel was signed by the Leafs this past summer but never played in the regular season for the big club, though he did play in three pre-season games. He played 13 games for their AHL-affiliate the Toronto Marlies, scoring one goal, one assist, and adding 36 penalty minutes.
Gabriel thanked the Leafs organization on Twitter Dec. 10.
"Was great to get to know the guys up top and down on the Marlies, made some great friendships quickly," Gabriel said. "I was treated incredibly well. It was packed full with learning experiences to take with me. Thanks to the fans too!"
The Newmarket-raised forward had expressed excitement about joining his hometown team, with former coaches and family also happy to see the move. He posted a photo of himself on social media as a kid wearing a Leafs jersey when he was first signed.
“Can’t put it into words,” Gabriel said at the time.
The journeyman is now joining his fifth NHL organization, splitting time between AHL and NHL clubs throughout his nine-season pro career thus far. He has scored two goals and three assists in 49 NHL games, along with 36 goals and 32 assists in 332 AHL games.
"I am beyond excited to have an opportunity with the Chicago Blackhawks," he said. "Chomping at the bit to get started, and have been already working at being ready for my first chance to pull on the jersey. Let's work!"
Krys has recorded 15 points in 64 AHL games with the Chicago-affiliated Rockford Icehogs, with one assist in eight games this season.
