Central York Fire Services (CYFS) responded to three fires in Newmarket and Aurora in just over an hour on Monday, May 15.
The first incident was at 1:48 p.m. at a retail business on Bayview Avenue in Aurora. Fire was found in the garbage compactor in the back of the store.
All staff and customers were evacuated as a precaution and there were no injuries.
The compactor company was called to the scene to help remove the compactor from the building and spread contents to be extinguished.
Business was interrupted for about an hour but there were no damages to the building.
Crews were on the scene for about one hour and 45 minutes.
The second incident was at 2:27 p.m. at a residence on Ralston Crescent in Newmarket.
CYFS received a call for a house fire in Newmarket and crews responding found a deck and shed. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
There were no injuries but three properties were damaged from the high heat of the fire.
The third incident was at 2:52 p.m. at a business on Yonge Street in Newmarket. CYFS received a call about a dumpster fire outside of a restaurant.
The fire was contained to the dumpster and crews were able to extinguish it with impact the restaurant's operations.
All three fires were fully extinguished and there is no ongoing impact to the community.
With multiple fires in a short amount of time, mutual aid was initiated and crews from Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services provided station coverage in case more calls came in.
Crews from Richmond Hill were required to help in the third fire incident.
CYFS also collaborated with York Paramedic Services, York Regional Police, and utility companies with these incidents.
