'Take a little time to enjoy the view': York Region chair departs

Chair and CEO Wayne Emerson celebrated after completing final council meeting

After a decade as the head of York Region, chair and CEO Wayne Emmerson got a little emotional as he prepared to say farewell to the seat.

After a lengthy standing ovation from staff and council at his final meeting Nov. 28, Emmerson presented a prepared video to give thanks to all the people he had worked with over the years, as well as his family.

“This has been a great opportunity for me to work with so many different people and make a lot of friends, so I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart,” Emmerson said, before repeating a mantra he often has to end council meetings. “Take a little time to enjoy the view.”

York Region celebrated Emmerson as he departed for retirement, due to happen Nov. 29. Emmerson announced his retirement plans in October, after serving 10 years as regional chair and 17 years as mayor in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti spoke on behalf of council members for the occasion toward the end of the meeting.

“Your leadership and your vision and your unwavering dedication to the residents of York Region truly set a standard that all politicians should aspire to,” Scarpitti said. “On your guidance, York Region continues to be an incredible place to live, work and play.”

Scarpitti recounted achievements in Emmerson’s tenure, including the advancement of the Yonge-North Subway Extension and the establishment of YTN to bring high-speed fibre connectivity throughout the region.

“While today may mark the end of your time in politics, it’s truly far from the end of your legacy,” Scarpitti said.

The province appointed Emmerson to the chair role at the start of the term, although he also came out ahead in a council vote. The province has not yet said when it will appoint Emmerson’s successor. In previous years, the chair’s role was decided on by a vote from council.

Emmerson expressed thanks to everyone for the celebration.

“Everything’s working fine,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure, all mine. Thank you for everything … Good luck to you all.”
