A cast of seasoned local actors is ready to hit the stage for the Newmarket Stage Company’s mammoth production of Steel Magnolias at the end of February at the Royal Canadian Legion in Newmarket.
Julia Roberts played Shelby in the blockbuster film version of this play about the bond shared by a group of women in a small-town Southern community and how they cope with the problems of life.
Susan Lane, Denise Kennedy, Bethany Heemskerk, Cheidre Kyle Mackey, Kyla Da’Aguiar and Carol Dowell star in the dramatic comedy produced by Sue Meacock and directed by Teri Hallett.
“It’s going great and they are such a spirited cast. They are itching to get on stage with this presentation,” Hallet said.

Steel Magnolias hits Stage 426 Feb. 20, 21 and 22 and Feb. 27, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 29 and Thursday, Feb. 27 with matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 each and a portion of the draw will be donated to the Southlake Regional Health Centre diabetes program.
The play features cabaret seating and refreshments are available.
