Northwesterly winds gusting to 70 to 80 km/h forecast for this afternoon, with a 40% chance of flurries tonight, according to Environment Canada special weather statement

Environment Canada is warning of strong wind gusts for Newmarket and area this afternoon and evening, following yesterday's spring snowstorm.

Northwesterly winds gusting 70 to 80 km/h are forecast to develop this afternoon, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries this evening, according to Environment Canada's special weather statement for today.

The strong winds are expected to weaken by midnight.

"Gusty winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Local power outages will also be possible," the agency states.

Most of southern Ontario was hit by the spring snowstorm yesterday, with accumulations of four to eight centimetres of snow forecast.

According to Environment Canada, Newmarket's accumulated precipitation yesterday was 8.7 mm.

Yesterday's low temperature was -2C, a far cry from the record low of -10C in 1997.

The record high in Newmarket for April 18 was 26.6C in 2002.
