Southlake Health has been named one of the top three community hospitals in Ontario by Newsweek.

For seven consecutive years, Newsweek has recognized Southlake as one of the World’s Best Hospitals, according to a Southlake Health news release. This year, Southlake is also one of the top four community hospitals in Canada.

“Being named one of Ontario’s top three community hospitals is an incredible honour and a direct result of the dedication and expertise of our world-class team,” said Dr. Paul Woods, president and CEO of Southlake Health. “No matter where you are in life, leading-edge care is always within reach at Southlake Health, and through our Strategy for the Decade Ahead, we will bring that care even closer to home by transforming Southlake into a distributed health network.”

Southlake serves some of the fastest-growing communities in Canada, delivering care typically available at large academic hospitals, the hospital said.

“The Southlake Health family of 6,000 staff, medical staff, and volunteers work together to deliver leading-edge care, close to home every day,” said Cristina Amaral, vice-president, people, and chief human resources officer of Southlake Health. “Our commitment to continually enhancing the quality of care and patient experience has secured us a place among Canada’s top hospitals, most of which are nationally renowned academic institutions. Congratulations to our entire team for raising the bar and setting the standard for community hospitals.”

Southlake’s new 10-year strategic plan outlines a plan to build a distributed health network by working with partners to establish additional footholds across the region.

Powered by Statista, a global data firm, Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals ranking was developed with input from a global board of renowned medical experts supporting the continuous development of the ranking’s methodology, according to the news release. Four data sources were used to evaluate the best medical institutions in 30 countries:

  • Recommendations from medical experts: an international online survey of more than 80,000 health-care professionals.
  • Patient experience: Publicly available data from existing patient surveys was used to analyze patient experience.
  • Patient reported outcome measures: standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.
  • Hospital quality metrics: quality-of-care measures for specific treatments, and indicators such as hygiene measures and patient safety.

Quick facts

  • Southlake provides care to three of Ontario’s six fastest-growing municipalities — East Gwillimbury, Bradford West Gwillimbury, and New Tecumseth. Southlake’s catchment area is growing at twice the rate of the province as a whole.
  • As a Level 7 regional cardiac program, Southlake’s contributions to advancing cardiac care extends far beyond the operating room. It is the fourth-largest comprehensive heart program in Ontario and provides almost every type of cardiac care, with the exception of heart transplants.
  • Southlake Health earned international recognition as one of only six hospitals in Ontario to achieve meritorious outcomes in both categories in the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.
  • Southlake’s regional cancer centre is a hub for full-service cancer care that delivers services and programs for patients and families living in York Region, Simcoe County, and beyond. The program collaborates with top research facilities like the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and SickKids to deliver leading-edge care to patients, close to home.
