A longtime Newmarket software solutions company has received a global award from one of its longtime partners.
Phoenix Systems, which has been based in Newmarket for 40 years, is being recognized with a Global SYSPRO PartnerUP award for "generating the highest revenue across all regions while providing an excellent customer experience, enabling manufacturers and distributors to see maximum value from SYSPRO ERP."
“To recognize that we are competing with other resellers like ourselves all over the world, it was quite a shock and a surprise. Certainly a great recognition for our staff and for our customers,” company founder Dan O'Toole said.
O'Toole, who has more than 50 years of experience in the industry, was in the first graduating class for computer science and technology at Sheridan College.
"I would challenge anyone to find another business in our space that has been in the market this length of time,” he said.
The company provides services and software solutions for small and mid-size businesses throughout North America.
“Our key focus is providing automation for organizations to allow them to be more profitable and competitive in the marketplace today,” O'Toole said.
For example, in a time of staffing shortages they could put together a system to enable a collections department to function with two employees instead of three, creating more efficiency and greater profit.
While O'Toole said their name is likely better known in California than it is in the local area, the business has a big presence here.
He started Phoenix Systems in 1980 and moved to Newmarket three years later. It is located on Harry Walker Parkway, where O'Toole has owned the office since it was built.
Phoenix Systems also serves some clients in the area and, over the years, has sponsored many local sports teams.
Outside of Newmarket, it has branches in Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Portland, Buffalo and Boston.
For 37 years it has been partnered with SYSPRO, selling its software to customers.
The average employee has been at Phoenix Systems for 10 to 15 years, with many who have been at the company for more than 20 years.
It's these longtime relationships with staff, with partners like SYSPRO and with customers that have been the key to moving forward for the company.
"We’ve got the ingredients for growth in a very competitive marketplace,” O'Toole said.
