Scam callers have been targeting Newmarket-Tay Power customers and threatening to disconnect their power, the utility company said.
In a scam alert posted on Twitter, it said "NT Power's customers are being called by scammers threatening disconnection unless immediate payment is made. These calls are not from NT Power. Please hang up and contact NT Power should you be called."
This is not the first time the power company has warned its customers about scams. In April, it said that the Ontario Energy Board had seen a 70 per cent increase in energy-related scams in recent months.
In October, NT Power warned that door-to-door scammers were advising customers about hydro rebates for installing water systems — those rebates do not exist.
In June 2021, the power company warned about the current disconnection scam.
NT Power takes these scams seriously and in the past has issued a warning to customers after just one report of a scam.
“It’s been our experience in the past that the majority of customers don’t report it. They just ignore it or don’t let us know, so anytime we hear of at least one customer, we know that there’s obviously others being called as well, so we just put out a general message to inform people that it is happening,” said Blaine Osmond, communication coordinator with NT Power of one of the past scams.
If you do get a scam call, you are asked to contact NT Power at (905) 895-2309 or email them at [email protected].
