Commemorations for International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be taking place in Newmarket at Riverwalk Commons and the Fred A. Lundy Bridge on Monday, Jan. 27.
The town will join cities across the country in illuminating local monuments, buildings and landmarks in yellow in remembrance of the six million Jewish children, women, and men murdered in the Holocaust.
At sundown, yellow lighting will be on full display throughout Riverwalk Commons and the Fred A. Lundy Bridge on Water Street in downtown Newmarket.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and local Jewish Federations have co-ordinated the illumination of more than 30 public venues across Canada, including Nathan Phillips Square’s Toronto sign, the CN Tower, Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada, Niagara Falls, Montreal’s Biosphère, Vancouver’s BC Place and St. John’s City Hall.
Monuments in Burlington, Markham, Hamilton and Vaughan will also participate in commemorations on Jan. 27.
This year marks 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
