Report provides snapshot of York Region employment, business trends

The Regional Municipality of York released the 2019 Employment and Industry Report which provides an annual overview of industry and employment trends in York Region.

“As a top destination of choice for investment, The Regional Municipality of York is the third largest business community in Ontario,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Business and job growth are fundamental to our overall economic vitality and quality of life. We remain committed to continuing to foster an environment that attracts businesses and employment opportunities.”

Report highlights include:  

  • 2.2% employment growth rate over 2018; continuing to outpace both national and provincial averages for the fifth consecutive year   
  • 654,650 estimated jobs in York Region as of mid-2019 
  • 13,800 jobs added between 2018 and 2019 
  • 78% of surveyed employment are in the service-producing sectors 
  • 35,400 businesses surveyed in 2019

“York Region remains a thriving economic hub for talent and opportunity,” said City of Markham Regional Councillor Jim Jones, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development. “To promote economic vitality, we continue to attract and retain a variety of high quality jobs to ensure residents in York Region have an opportunity to live and work in their community.”

The manufacturing, retail trade and professional, scientific and technical services sectors continue to hold the largest shares of surveyed employment in 2019. This diversity of York Region’s employment provides a variety of opportunities for residents.

In 2019, York Region surveyed 35,400 businesses through the York Region employment survey. The survey collects employment data and provides a snapshot of York Region’s economy. Data is compared over time to identify trends.
