York Region is progressing on a new 97-unit housing development coming to Whitchurch-Stouffville by spring 2024.

The region announced the construction for the $44-million six-storey apartment this week, with work already underway since spring. The apartment on 5675 Main St. in Whitchurch-Stouffville will be operated by Housing York to be offered by households on the subsidized waitlist.

“I am proud to join my York Region council colleagues, along with federal and provincial partners in announcing the construction,” Newmarket Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh said on Facebook. “The building will contain a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom rental apartments for seniors, families, couples and individuals.”

The spaces will be offered in order of application date, based on location chosen, bedroom size and specific requirements requested. The housing will be open to residents throughout York Region, though there are approximately 15,000 on the central waiting list.

The project is also partially funded by federal and provincial governments, making up more than $11 million of the $44-million project.

The region said the building will also feature indoor amenity space and a rooftop patio.

“The 3.7-acre site is located in downtown Stouffville with close proximity to transit, retail, dining, places of employment and health services,” the region said. “The new apartment building will be the first development on the property with potential for an additional development in the future.”

The project is also being developed with environmentally sustainable practices, targeting a gold standard under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system.
