Proposed 22-unit townhouse complex on Gorham gets public airing

Newmarket residents invited to have their say at virtual planning meeting July 27

A proposed development to raze a single house that has been operating as a commercial business at 849 Gorham St. to make way for three-storey townhouses will get a public airing Monday, July 27 at the Town of Newmarket’s second virtual public planning meeting.

The applicant, Gorham Developments 849 Inc., proposes to build three blocks of townhouses totalling 20 units on the property and two semi-detached homes, which is located on Gorham Street between Alexander Road and Carlson Drive/Doak Lane.

Residents who wish to have their say on the proposed housing development can submit comments in writing or register to speak to council remotely during the public hearing.

Council will consider the developer’s request for an amendment to the town’s official plan that would permit the housing project on the property, which is now zoned as stable residential. As well, the applicant is seeking a zoning bylaw amendment from the current residential detached dwelling status, to allow both townhouse and semi-detached dwellings.

Council will not make a final decision regarding this application at the meeting, rather all written and verbal comments will be referred to planning staff to consider and return with a report at a future meeting.

The public planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 27 at 1 p.m. The developer’s presentation will be available online closer to the meeting date.
