Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with York Region Transit workers July 5.

The federal government is giving York Region a boost to help with the electrification of its public transit fleet.

York Region is to receive $76 million to build an electric bus fleet. With support from this funding, the region will get 180 zero-emissions buses, 91 electric charges and 14 on-route chargers, funded with help through the government’s zero-emission transmission fund.

Once in service, the buses are expected to reduce the region’s carbon emissions by 15,982 tonnes annually, the equivalent of taking 4,000 vehicles off the roads.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the region July 5 for the announcement at a York Region Transit facility in Richmond Hill.

“Canadians need to get to work with less traffic, more comfort, and clean air — that’s what public transit is all about,” Trudeau said in a news release. “Our government is making our transit system fairer, with innovative, climate-friendly and affordable options to get you where you need to be.”

York Region has worked toward electrification of its bus fleet for several years, with plans to purchase exclusively electric buses by 2030. The project is also supported by a $177 million investment by York Region. The region plans to get to net zero emissions by 2050.

The initiative is also supported by a $136 million loan announced last year by the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

“Access to safe and efficient transportation options continues to be a top priority for York regional council,” York Region chair Wayne Emmerson. “With the support of the Government of Canada and the Canada Infrastructure Bank, we are able to further increase access to public transit in a way that supports the council’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.”

Newmarket-Aurora MP Tony Van Bynen was also there for the announcement.

"Great to have the prime minister in York Region," Van Bynen said on social media. "This investment will have a real impact for the people of Newmarket-Aurora. It means newer buses, cleaner transportation, and tangible action to reach net-zero emissions by 2050."

The region plans to upgrade its three existing transit facilities with zero-emission buses with solar power and battery storage systems to further reduce emissions.

“York Region’s transition to electric buses is a critical step toward reducing emissions for decades to come,” Canada Infrastructure Bank chief executive officer Ehren Cory said. “The Canada Infrastructure Bank’s $136-million loan, combined with the Zero Emission Transit Fund grant, supports much cleaner and quieter public transportation for residents.”
