Power outages in the area of Davis Drive and Bayview Avenue in Newmarket during this afternoon's severe thunderstorm impacted 16,320 Newmarket-Tay Power customers.
"It's a fluid situation right now," Alex Braletic, Newmarket-Tay Power, vice-president, engineering and operations, told NewmarketToday. "About 16,000 customers are out due to a lightning strike on a Hydro One line. This was a loss of power due to Hydro One supply. Crews are currently responding."
Power was restored in about 40 minutes to the majority of customers, according the NT Power's Twitter post, despite the initial estimated time of the outage as greater than four hours, according to NT Power’s outage map.

The Town of Newmarket cancelled public swimming this afternoon at the Outdoor Gorman Pool and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex due to the power outage and weather. However, swimming lessons will be held this evening, the town said.
