Pickering College marks UN Day with flurry of flags (7 photos)

The Newmarket private school also celebrated its full membership in the UNESCO Associated Schools Network

Celebrating United Nations Day had a special significance for Pickering College today.

The Newmarket private school is now a full member school in the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, according to communications manager Naomi Côté.

"Pickering College is the only independent school in Ontario to attain full membership in this network that links educational institutions across the world around a common goal — to build the defences of peace in the minds of children and young people," she said.

This morning, students from all grades marched in a parade carrying the flags of the 28 UN member states represented at Pickering College to mark the anniversary of the 1945 UN Charter.

Pickering students represent a diversity of cultures, religions and perspectives, and the boarding program attracts international students from around the globe, Côté added.

The UN member states include Australia, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Iran, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

The ceremony, organized by the Grade 12 politics class, also included a presentation about the UN and a video about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child that were shown to the assembled student body. Each member of the class presented one slide.
