NEWS RELEASE
PICKERING COLLEGE

In a school first, a Grade 12 student has successfully secured the rights to host and run a TEDx event at Pickering College on Feb. 12.
For her Capstone Project, Yagmur Ozturk, a boarding student from Turkey, is required to take action on an issue of local or global significance. Ozturk’s Capstone Project topic is freedom of speech and giving a voice to young people.
“Growing up in Turkey, I am critical of silencing voices, which is why I wanted my Capstone Project to focus on giving a voice to young people,” says Yagmur Ozturk, a Grade 12 student at Pickering College. “We have a very diverse student body at Pickering, therefore I believe that our TEDx conference will allow our audience to understand different perspectives.”
This student-organized, student-run event will feature eight speakers in Grades 9 to 12 who will share a message that they believe is worth sharing, covering a wide range of topics. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
“It is really exciting for us to host our first TEDxYouth event - TEDx promotes giving voice to those with ‘ideas worth spreading.’ This is clearly aligned with our Global Leadership Program which empowers our students to speak up about their beliefs and the changes they want to see in the world,” says Julia Hunt, Senior Director, Strategic Innovation at Pickering College.
This event is open to the public and tickets are available for purchase at a cost of $10+HST: https://www.pickeringcollege.on.ca/upcomingevents/ted-x
