Pflag York Region has partnered with Pflag Canada to launch a nationwide lawn sign campaign.

Pflag York Region is asking local residents to help promote inclusivity and peace by planting a sign on their lawn.

Pflag York Region has partnered with Pflag Canada in the nationwide lawn sign campaign.

“We've seen the rising tide of discrimination south of the border and through it all, many of us thought never here,” said Tristan Coolman, president of Pflag York Region in a news release. “Anti-trans rhetoric and discrimination is here, it's really never left.”

Pflag is a volunteer-led registered charity and is an LGBTQIA2+ support, resource, and education network in York Region.

The cost of production and shipping is covered by the national Pflag team to ensure this campaign remains as accessible as possible, Coolman said.

Lawn signs are 18 by 24 inches landscape format with wire H stakes. Signs include statements like ‘protect and defend trans kids year around’, ‘trans kids deserve to grow old’ and ‘support trans youth.’

Requests will be fulfilled on a first come first serve basis, and signs will be available for pickup in York Region at a later time, likely in Richmond Hill.

“It is now time for us to meet this moment and challenge this strengthening movement of disinformation and anti-trans policy making,” said Coolman.

Additional signs may be available at in-person meetings at a later date. The organization plans to host more events in the future in support of eradicating transphobia, he added.

“We know it will take more than a lawn sign to fight against this rising tide of anti-trans discrimination,” said Coolman. “In the coming weeks, Pflag Canada York Region will be announcing other ways we are arming our community to prepare themselves to confront and combat the disinformation impacting our community.”
