Christmas was made even more magical this year for a Newmarket family.
On Friday, Farhan Suleman proposed to Taylor Smart at the Riverwalk Commons.
Ahead of time, Suleman looped in Smart’s parents about his plans to propose to their daughter.
The family has long been passionate about Christmas and Smart’s father, Larry, wanted to get in on the fun to surprise his daughter.
To ensure Larry could be there without tipping off Taylor, he donned a Grinch costume while handing out candy canes to the community.
That kept him near Suleman with his camera ready to go, while keeping Taylor completely in the dark about the whole thing.
Suleman proposed to Smart in the LED tunnel at Riverwalk Commons during Frozen Fridays and the festival of lights that happens every holiday season in Newmarket and the proposal went off without a hitch.
“The plan worked out perfectly and there was even a large crowd surrounding the tunnel as it happened,” said Larry. “Me being dressed up as the Grinch seemed to fit right in with the theme of (Riverwalk Commons) and the Christmas lights.”
The family was able to keep the big secret right up until the proposal, which Taylor had no idea was coming.
“To say I was shocked is an understatement,” said Taylor.
“The look on Taylor's face made all the planning worth it,” added Suleman.
The family said they spent all of Christmas Day together and the proposal was still the topic of discussion, especially with how shocked Taylor was about it all.”
“Christmas is our favourite time of year,” said Larry. “And it was a perfect night for a perfect couple.”
