Ontario Works cheques can be picked up in person, as York Region is unable to send them by mail until the Canada Post strike is resolved.
The region is not able to send any large distribution mailing during the strike, including notices, immunization letters or Ontario Works cheques during the disruption. However, the region is offering other ways that residents can access these services.
Ontario Works cheques for December will be processed and held in local offices pending a strike resolution and can be picked up starting Nov. 27 after 1 p.m. until Nov. 29 at 4 p.m., then again the following week. Those receiving payment via direct deposit or reloadable payment cards will receive payment as usual.
Those customers unsure can contact their local caseworker at 1-877-464-4695, where they can also discuss switching to direct deposit or reloadable payment card.
Public health will also not be sending out mailings, but you can inquire regarding immunization, dental and other health concerns by contacting York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653.
For 24-hour support from a registered nurse on medical symptoms, breastfeeding information and whether you should care for yourself or seek medical services, contact Health 811 at 1-866-797-0000.
For court services, you can request a trial or submit other applications through [email protected] or in person at York Region’s courthouse at 17150 Yonge St. in Newmarket. You can also make payments at the courthouse or online at paytickets.ca.
For York Region Transit, though seeking eligibility for mobility on-request paratransit can drop off applications at the transit headquarters at 55 Orlando Ave. in Richmond Hill during business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
