The NWMRKT Proud tuque campaign will continue this weekend in support of the Newmarket Food Pantry, with two special spots to pick up the hats.
On Saturday, Feb. 18 you can make a donation of $20 and pick up a tuque at Winterfest from 11 a.m., which takes place at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, or at No Frills on Davis Drive from around 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We're hoping that we can raise a great deal of funds for the food pantry," said Joanne Sweers, who is involved in the campaign along with her friend Rebecca Gardiner.
The pair had been making regular donations to the community fridge, but when they became aware of the increased need in the community they wondered how they could take it further. They had the idea to sell the tuques with the proceeds all going to the food pantry.
"Rebecca and I both feel that we're very fortunate. And we're able to share our in our blessings with our community," Sweer said.
Since starting the campaign in December, they have raised about $4,000. The goal is $10,000.
Sweer said this month is the perfect time to get a tuque. Not only is it still tuque-wearing weather, but the design also features a heart, which she said is great for Valentine's Day.
If you aren't able to visit one of the two events this weekend to get a tuque, they have been placed at a number of businesses throughout town as well. For a $20 donation, you can get them at Market Brewing, York Curling Club, Wheelz, Stacks Restaurant, K9-5 Doggie Daycare, Blood, Sweat and Train Gym and, of course, at the Newmarket Food Pantry.
