It's finally fall, and I couldn't be more thrilled!
Yes, I am that crazy basic, fall-loving lady who couldn't wait to get my hands on a pumpkin spice latte in August and decorated my front porch with hay, gourds and corn stalks just after Labour Day.
Something about fall just makes me so happy: the colours of the leaves, the cozy sweaters, the farm-fresh vegetables, Thanksgiving, Halloween...I love it all.
To quote Anne of Green Gables, "I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
It is just unfortunate the season is so short, which is why I fully embrace and make the most of it every year.
This past Friday, I decided to make my annual trip up to Laura's Farm Stand on Highway 27 in Cookstown. If you've never been, you're in for a treat.
What really intrigued me this year was their new Pumpkin Wall, an Instagrammer's dream — filled with gourds of all colours, shapes and sizes.
I begged my husband to come with me and take part in a fun, fall photo session, but he was pictured out after I forced politely convinced him to take fall family photos last weekend while apple picking.
So instead, I brought my friend, Wendy, along and we did our own photo shoot and had a blast!
Not only does Laura's have a large pumpkin patch filled with 60 different types of gourds, but they have a corn maze, a pick-your-own flower field, a fresh vegetable market, and tons of props placed around the grounds to use in your photographs, like tractors and marquee letters that spell out the word '#FALL'.
"That's the stuff people really like," said owner Laura Currie.
Currie has been running the 30-acre farm for the past four years. What started off as a little stand of fresh produce on the side of the road, has grown into one of the region's favourite interactive fall farms. Her parents own the egg farm right across the street, which was originally owned by her grandparents. She grew up learning how to plant, grow and harvest which has become a lifelong passion of hers.
Aside from the six staff who assist her during her busy harvest season, she does all the farming herself.
"I like working outside, and I like the farming part," she said. "I like to keep busy."
Laura's Farm Stand is open six days a week, closed every Tuesday and is located at 5590 Simcoe County Rd. 27, Cookstown.
