Walk It Off, a specialized neurological rehabilitation facility that has been assisting individuals in Newmarket for over a decade, has officially reopened at its new Yonge Street location.
Located at 16775 Yonge St. on the corner of Mulock Drive, Walk It Off now continues to provide fitness opportunities and specialized neurological rehabilitation to individuals who live with life-altering neurological conditions, such as spinal cord injuries and neuro-progressive conditions.
Walk It Off had formerly been located at 1235 Journey's End Cir. since it opened its doors in Newmarket in January 2012.
As one of the five clinics across Canada that offer dedicated neurological rehab, a more spacious and accessible gym marks a period of growth for the long-standing business, according to Rebecca Wheeler, the lead activity-based therapy trainer and clinic education co-ordinator.
“It has always been a sort of grassroots foundation where it was people who saw a need for this type of rehab that made it happen,” said Wheeler, who has been with the wellness centre since 2014.
“Outside of the neuro-physiotherapy and activity-based therapy, we also offer osteopathy and massage therapy to our population, as well as the general public. Those are some new services that we are expanding with our new location.”
Operations at the previous location were suspended in late December of last year, with the team spending their holidays moving across town to the Yonge Street location. The first day of operation at the new space took place on Jan 2.
A grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new location on Jan. 25, with Newmarket Mayor John Taylor, Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh and nearly 100 supporters in attendance to usher in the latest chapter of the clinic.
“It really feels like we are entering a growth period,” Wheeler said. “Expansion was the Number 1 thing as we were finding that the space was just too small. Visibility was something that we were looking for as well because we are trying to roll out other programs for the general public.”
“We are looking to offer group classes for individuals with mobility needs and a pediatric program, so to have a bigger space so that we could offer those programs and allow more people to be involved in experiencing a sense of community is incredible.”
