The Postmark Hotel on Newmarket’s Main Street is starting to shine brightly after a test of a heritage lighting system April 20.
Dozens of Newmarket residents responded excitedly on social media to the first test, which lit up the outside of the famed clock tower building. That is part of the ongoing renovations being done as developers get the hotel ready for opening.
Streetcar Developments president and CEO Les Mallins said the system designed by Marcel Dion Lighting Design aims to capture all the heritage elements of the building.
“While we are pleased with the preliminary results, lighting adjustments are required, and the work that is currently underway to remediate the facade (bricks, canopies, soffits) needs to be complete,” he said.
Streetcar expects to open the building in June. Some elements, such as the rooftop restaurant, will be finished in July.
Newmarket Mayor John Taylor posted about the test on Facebook.
“What an awesome sight! A great investment and improvement for our downtown. Very exciting!” Taylor said.
The Main Street BIA also offered praise for the new lighting.
"Looks amazing," it said on social media. "Thank you to Postmark Hotel for believing in Newmarket."
Other residents also responded with excitement to the display.
“So nice to see its restoration,” one resident said. “It’s been a long journey, and am looking forward to its opening!”
More work is needed to complete the lighting, Mallins said.
“The full nighttime presence of the building will only be felt once the non-heritage portions of the building come alive, including the rooftop addition,” he said.
