Newmarket's historic Union Hotel listed at $1.5M

Potential buyers have until Nov. 15 to get their offers in to the Regional Municipality of York, the property's owner.

Newmarket’s historic circa-1882 Union Hotel hit the real estate market Nov. 1 with a listing price of $1.495 million.

For just under $1.5 million, a potential buyer will get two buildings on 0.28 acres with 4,240-square-feet of total floor space. The property’s heritage designation is noted on both of its buildings at 425 and 431 Davis Dr., in the listing information.

The property is billed as “rarely offered” in its MLS listing, and in a prime location with easy access to Yonge Street and public transit. Indusite Realty Corporation is the listing broker.

All offers must be presented using the seller’s standard form of agreement of purchase and sale, and will be reviewed by the property’s owner, the Regional Municipality of York, beginning Nov. 15.

The Union Hotel at 425 Davis Dr., along with the adjacent building, has been designated a heritage property because it is representative of the town's early development and prominent local citizens who held court there.

Like other towns in Ontario during that period, hotels were a prominent part of the landscape. In 1880, Newmarket had no less than 10 hotels. Travellers on the Simcoe-Huron railroad reportedly took refuge at the Union Hotel, which also served as a social hub for political meetings, court proceedings and more, according to the Town of Newmarket's heritage bylaw document.
