The snowstorm tracking through southern Ontario delivered more than 24 centimetres of snow in Newmarket.
At noon on Monday, Jan. 17, volunteer snowfall amounts in Newmarket were measured at 24 centimetres, Environment Canada said. The snow continues to fall.
"A strong low pressure system tracked southeast of Lake Ontario and brought very heavy snow throughout Ontario Sunday night into this morning," the organization said. "At times, snowfall rates in excess of 10 centimetres in an hour were reported this morning in Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Area. Blowing snow was also reported in some areas."
Official snowfall amounts at the Ottawa International Airport and Toronto Pearson Airport were among the top 10 highest snowfall amounts in a single event at each of these places.
As of noon in Ottawa, 41 centimetres were reported. Pearson recorded 32 centimetres, while downtown Toronto saw 35 centimetres.
Some of the hardest hit areas, per Environment Canada, were Whitby with 52 centimetres, St Catharines with 50 centimetres, and the Niagara escarpment with 45 centimetres.
Other parts of York Region also saw high snowfall amounts with 27 centimetres reported in Vaughan and 24 centimetres reported in King City North.
Environment Canada said these are preliminary totals, and this is not yet their final report.
