Some Newmarket residents have been temporarily displaced after a fire in their home caused by “careless smoking” Saturday night.

Central York Fire Services crews arrived at the home on Don More Drive at about 10:30 p.m., seeing smoke and fire coming from the second-floor window, according to an incident report.

Fire crews entered the home and extinguished a fire in an upstairs bedroom.

The fire department said the building is temporarily uninhabitable due to air quality, but the Red Cross has provided support for accommodations.

The fire department said the building had working smoke alarms, which alerted occupants to the fire.

“Everyone was safely evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival,” the report said.

CYFS deployed five fire trucks, 22 firefighters and one command vehicle to the scene, with York Regional Police and York Region Paramedic Services also attending.

This is the second fire in Newmarket in as many days where Central York Fire Services has identified the cause as being smoking-related, with another caused by improperly discarding smoking material in the yard at the corner of Main and Water street March 20.

The fire department said careless smoking is the number 1 cause of fatal home fires in Ontario and reminds residents of the importance of properly disposing of smoking material to prevent fires. The department said to always use a large, deep ashtray that cannot be knocked over, not a garbage can, and keep it outside.
