Newmarket is reminding residents of where they can go to escape the sun as Environment Canada issues heat warnings throughout the area.
Environment Canada has put out a warning for Newmarket, with temperatures reaching near 31 degrees celsius and high humidex values expected for both July 19 and 20. The town sent a release to inform residents of the many public facilities open during regular hours to get some relief from the heat.
“Residents and members of the public looking to escape the warm temperatures this season can visit one of Newmarket’s facilities and amenities,” the town said.
The environmental agency warns that there will be little relief from the heat overnight and that you should watch out for signs of heat illness. Temperatures are expected to cool a bit Thursday.
You can get out of the heat at the following Newmarket facilities:
- Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr., 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. all days of the week
- Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, 100 Eagle St. W., 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. all days of the week
- Newmarket Public Library, 474 Park Ave., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
The municipality also offers pools at the Magna Centre and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex. You can find pool swim times at newmarket.ca/swimming. Pools and water features are available at:

You should be prepared for the high levels of heat, the town said.
“The town reminds residents that the best defence against heat-related illness is prevention. Take precautions when going outdoors, limit heat exposure if possible and stay hydrated,” the municipality said.
