Newmarket residents could enjoy ice skating in the downtown core as early as tomorrow as the town announces plans to reopen its Riverwalk Commons skating feature.
The town said it hopes to open the Mercedez-Benz Newmarket skating feature for the winter season Nov. 17. However, warmer temperatures could cause some delays to plans to open.
Once the rink can open, it will remain so for the season between 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The surface is for recreational skating only, with no sticks, balls, or nets allowed.
“Skaters are reminded to be courteous and respect all skaters,” the town said. “Please refrain from horseplay or tag.”
The skating surface is typically open until late March when spring arrives.
All skaters are encouraged to wear CSA-approved helmets.
Sticks and pucks are permitted after 10:30 p.m., the town said.
The municipality is preparing an array of winter activities in the coming weeks, including a tree-lighting ceremony Nov. 17 and the Santa Claus Parade Nov. 18. The Riverwalk Commons will play host to Frozen Fridays every Friday in December except Dec. 29, with activities running from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
