Newmarket’s Persian community made its presence felt and celebrated its culture in the town hall with the municipality recognizing Persian Heritage Month for the first time.

More than a dozen members of the Persian community visited council chambers today, as Seniors Iranian Multicultural Association representative Dela Fotoohi presented to council about the upcoming Persian New Year celebration, Nowruz, coming up March 20.

Fotoohi asked the town to recognize the upcoming celebration and spoke about how meaningful such a local celebration is.

“By celebrating Nowruz in our town of Newmarket, we embrace the rich, cultural diversity that makes our community unique,” she said. “It is an opportunity to learn from one another, foster inclusivity and strengthen our bonds.”

The town officially proclaimed Persian Heritage Month locally in March. The month, recognized provincially as well, coincides with Nowruz, which marks the start of spring March 20.

"This vibrant festival welcomes the new year and brings families and communities together to reflect on the past and look forward with hope," Fotoohi said.

Fotoohi discussed Persian culture during her presentation to council. The Seniors Iranian Multicultural Association has also put up a display just outside the town council chambers, known as a "Haft-Seen" Nowruz table with several cultural items.

“With your support, we can organize events that showcase the beauty of this tradition,” Fotoohi said.

Newmarket councillors praised the presentation.

“Thank you to everyone who came out today to share your support for this,” Vegh said.

The association held a free public launch of an art exhibit at the Newmarket Public Library March 16. On March 23, the library will also host an event by Newmarket artist Ghazele Naderian guiding a painting workshop, all part of the month-long celebration.

“Let’s welcome Nowruz with open hearts and a spirit of hope,” Fotoohi said.
