Newmarket Metro customers are giving back to make sure local families have enough to eat over the holiday season.

The grocery store chain annually partners with charities across the province for its Food Donation Bag program, giving customers the opportunity to purchase a donation bag filled with food in store or online.

Last year, Newmarket’s Metro at Yonge Street and Mulock Drive was the second highest donating location in Ontario, raising nearly $18,000 in value of food collected.

This year, donation bags purchased by its customers will go to the Newmarket Food Pantry

The food bags are for sale at Metro now, at various prices, starting at $5.99.

On top of the donation bags, Metro will donate up to 75,000 meals to Feed Ontario.

According to a report from Feed Ontario, 501,590 people used a food bank in Ontario in 2017, with one of every third person being a child.

The report also states there was a 10 per cent increase in the number of seniors accessing food banks in 2017, which accounts for an increase of nearly three times the growth of Ontario's senior population.
